Encouragement …

Encouragement …we all need it. Thank God when it is delivered at just the right time. Remember, He is not the God of coincidence … not to a Christian, anyway. He works His will in marvelous ways.

Today had me wondering … “Am I headed in the right direction?” “Should I handle this ‘like this’ or ‘like that’?” “Am I of any value?” “Does it even matter if I do this?” “Should I chuck this whole deal and forget it?”

It wasn’t that I was depressed or sad – I was discouraged, yes, but just questioning my presuppositions. I had been so excited at the onset of this whole project and now … just wondering … and then I saw two simple sentences that had been written almost a week ago and they changed everything.

I don’t know about you but a few words of encouragement are all I need to totally change my outlook on something gone ‘sour’ or when I am exhausted and don’t think I can finish one more chore … or when I have one more task to do and I’m altogether drained of every ounce of creativity … yeah, someone can say a few simple words and change my whole entire mindset and even my energy level.

Does that mean I am fickle? Does it mean I am easily influenced? No, it means I am a person, designed by God the Father, to be fueled by words of love, appreciation, and approval. Jesus knew this concerning his disciples. Paul and the other writers understood this about the New church. Words of praise and commendation are all through God’s word. If we are to learn lessons from and be like the folks in the early church then it would do us well to praise and encourage one another.

I am so thankful I have friends who lift my load for me even when they don’t know that’s what they’re going to do. Just by being themselves, expressing their love with a few words of praise when I least expect it, can make my day brighter.

I know for a fact that as you’re living your life and you’re putting yourself in God’s hands – like wanting so badly for Him to mold you and direct you in the right way – then He will show you through various means that all is right with your world or that it will be all right. He uses His children, your brothers and sisters, in ways that make our path more level, like to brighten the way that was dark and unsure, or maybe they just show up to help you up over some boulder that rolled down off a mountain.

And so, now I feel re-energized. I feel re-focused and am confident of the way I intend to proceed. I feel like God Himself looked down and gave me His nod of approval – He may have even winked.

As for you and your household, this is a “walk this way” commendation – use your words in an effectual way to build up your partner, your children, your brothers and sisters in the Lord, your co-workers, your fellow students, the grocery clerk, the waitress ………… just look around, listen, hear with your heart someone who needs your precious sweet words of praise. You may never, ever know that the very words you say could very well determine the course of someone’s entire future – heavenward bound.

When someone does make a difference in your life it’d be a good thing to let them know. Just the acknowledgment of their praise could in turn be exactly what they need to make it through their day as well.

You see, we’re all in this together – interwoven by God’s hand – a tapestry of life and humanity throughout all time and it’s these times of brightness and illumination, contrasting with the darkness of doubt that the picture becomes beautiful and the Father looks down and says “It’s good.”

This one’s for you Jennifer – Thanks. You truly don’t know the difference you made. Love you.

Acts 11:23 When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.

Acts 15:32 Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the brothers.

Acts 16:40 After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, where they met with the brothers and encouraged them. Then they left.

Romans 12:5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us …. 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage …
